Soham Grammarians - King Arthur's Court Pageant, Speech Day 22nd July 1955

Soham Grammarian, New Year 1956

from the article RETROSPECT, by RGS

Tea on the lawn was provided by Miss Lowe and the kitchen staff, and was followed by a presentation of excerpts from “King Arthur’s Court,” produced by Mr. Pusey and Mr. Waller.

The summer greenery of the Nut Walk provided an effective background for the gay costumes of the second forms who presented this pageant. Mr. Askem is to be congratulated on his most successful work with the costumes. The School Choir also assisted; and here it is fitting to record a word of gratitude to the friends of the School who so readily sacrificed a day to come and form an orchestra to accompany the singing. The excerpts were much appreciated by the parents; but one cannot but ponder upon man, time and tide on recalling the sight of a desperate Mr. Atkinson furtively man-handling a double-bass across the lawn to the orchestra platform, feverishly stripping off its case, and solemnly raising his bow to play the last note of the finale.

Editor: these photos are provided by Ron Meadows SG53: Mr Pusey is conducting.  Ron writes: I really don't remember much about the day. I remember that we all had to line up and those under a certain height became the women and the taller guys were nobles and knights. Regrettably I was a woman.
