Soham Grammarians - Edmund Quinn BSc (Dunelm) Physics 1950-56

Mr Edmund (Ted) Quinn died peacefully in his sleep on 10th September 2010, aged 85. Peter Deasley very kindly represented the Soham Grammarians at his funeral in Coventry on 7th October.

He had been a regular attender with Rex Waller and Leon Kitchen at reunions. Like Rex he had been a wartime Navigator in the RAF, in his case in Bomber Command. He eventually became a Squadron Leader afer the war in connection with CCF work.

He was a keen sportsman, his main sport being Hockey – he was captain of St Bede College and played for Durham University, picking up a knee injury. When at SGS he played football for Fordham, in the Cambridgeshire League and whilst at SGS had to have a cartilage operation.

In 1956, having made his mark not only as a teacher but also with athletics, National Savings and school dramatic productions, he left to take charge of the science side at Patchway Bilateral Secondary School near Bristol. He was later at the Judd School, Tonbridge, Durham School and Stoke Park, a girl's school in Coventry.

He married Kathleen, who died in 2003, and they had a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Elizabeth.

Leon Kitchen and Rex Waller were impressed Ted's strongly held principles lead him late in life to being active against the war in Iraq.
