Soham Grammarian Summer 1947

CRICKET NOTES

The cricket season has been disappointing. Only two school matches have been won and many of our defeats have been severe. The batting throughout the school is woefully weak; very few boys have any ideas how to use their feet, an absolute essential if strokes are to be made down the line of the ball.

Our bowling on the other hand has been good mainly. The brunt of our attack has been from Ball and Franklin, and only one school side has made a hundred runs against us. Franklin at times has bowled his off-breaks magnificently; he has usually sacrificed speed for spin and flight and should be a tower of strength to the school team next year.

Great promise has been shown, and it is hoped that next season we shall have a better story to tell.

RAT

The season was again opened with the fixture against the Headmaster's XI. The school secured a quick wicket, but Mr Taylor (61 not out) and R. Baker (25 not out) batted until tea, when they both retired. Play was resumed. and with the score 130-6 the Headmaster declared.

The bowling of the Headmaster's XI proved to be equal to their batting and the school were all out for 44.

The school secured their first victory at the expense of Wisbech Grammar School. Wisbech batted first and were dismissed for 60 runs, Ball taking 5 wickets for 12 runs. The school gained the required runs for the loss of 5 wickets, Reed scoring a fine 46.

The third match was against Soham Town CC. After early successes the school failed to press home their advantage, and the Town finished with 54 runs. This proved too large a total for the school, who scored 39.

Visiting Saffron Walden Friends' School, the home side batted first and ran up a total of 104, 50 of which their Captain scored. Franklin took 7 wickets for 49 runs. The school's reply amounted to only 49.

Batting first against the Kings' School at Ely, the school scored 112, Ball 28 and Routledge 25. The King's School, however, passed this for the loss of only 4 wickets. Ball took 3 wickets for 42 runs.

At March the school soon found themselves in difficulties. Bonham (14) profited by a change of bowlers and raised the scored to 43. March won easily by 6 wickets.

Playing away against Newmarket Secondary School the 1st XI sustained their fifth successive defeat. The school batted first and only Godden (20) played the bowling on its merits. Newmarket passed the school's total of 34 for the loss of 2 wickets.

Against Newport Grammar School the school scored 88 against the best bowling encountered so far this season. Reed (27) and Norton (26 not out) were the most successful batsmen. Newport were dismissed for 64. Franklin bowled well to take 8 wickets for 30 runs.
