Soham Grammarian Coronation Issue, Summer 1953
CRICKET SUMMARY
The weather, coronation week, and an epidemic of mumps at Ely have conspired to curtail our cricket programme considerably. We have been unable to play either match with the Kings' School and have missed the Newport and County Club games. March have gained the better of us on two occasions, but otherwise we have more than held our own. There have been occasions when declarations have been slightly mistimed, for the captain's job is to see that, while not being overgenerous with batting time for his opponents, he must give his bowlers time to get the other side out.
Bullman, Docherty and South have got us out of trouble several times by stubborn batting. To bat successfully one needs the correct approach to the game, having to fight until a decision is reached: there is much more to cricket than a few hours in the fresh air. The younger members of the team might remember that their characters are moulded at the wicket.
Ansell and Burton, ably backed up by Bishop and Rouse, have maintained our attack, and the fact that South has been called upon for so few overs bears out their effectiveness.
There is a strong nucleus of middle school boys in the team - which is a good thing. Guiver, Pearson, Leonard and South have all been persevered with, and although they have not made a spectacular contribution to the team's efforts, we shall rely on them to bear the heaviest burdens of responsibility in the near future.
