CRICKET NOTES
In last year's resumé I predicted that we should have a very good season and the performances of the First XI this term have amply justified that forecast. Speaking in general terms we have looked like a cricket team which means that we have had a good deal to offer the opposition in all phases of the game. Firstly our batting has come up to expectation; we no longer look upon a hundred as a great score but a total that ought to be obtained in a reasonable afternoon's game. Guiver and Pearson have, more often than not, given us a good start. Pearson has been particularly sound, and although Guiver hits the ball very hard he must learn to curb his impetuosity for a few more overs and dig in at the start of an innings. South, Dennis and Burton, G, can be relied upon to stop a rot, particularly the former whose patience and general approach to the game have stood us in good stead. For a few quick runs we have had Bullman and Leonard, and the other batsmen have seldom been called upon.
To Burton, V, and Leonard in the main has fallen the task of bowling our opponents out and their analyses show how commendably they have applied themselves to their task. Theirs is a pacey combination; Burton's inswingers from one end and Leonard's outswingers from the other have allowed the captain to make few bowling changes although on occasions Rouse has kept them on too long. I am thinking particularly of the match against the County Club when Burton was bowled into the ground while Bishop would have been more effective. Dennis has become a good seam bowler as we expected and Bishop and Rouse have spun and pitched the ball well.
The fielding has been above our usual standard, both the general keenness and the throwing-in have borne the stamp of an unbeaten side. Vail's two well-judged catches in the Old Boys' match deserve a special mention.
The Second XI and Under-fourteen XI have made good progress under the guidance of Mr Kitchen and Mr Phythian, and although their role may at times have been obscured by the performances of the first team they are the future representatives of the school. We may run up against stiffer opposition next season and so to all cricketers I would say don't spurn your bat the whole of the winter, pick it up at odd times and get the feel of it again.
