Soham Grammarian Summer 1956
CRICKET NOTES
We suffered a heavy blow on the first day of the term when we learnt that Anthony South, who had played twice for the county last year, was not coming back this term. However, after a few nets we realised that Cox A. would be a tower of strength to our bowling after the shine had gone, and that he could 'tweak as well as Twink.'
That we have had a successful season can be seen by the more detailed accounts, and our successes have been due more to an all-round ability and soundness than to the sparkle of one or two individual performers. Seldom have Guiver and Burton failed to give us a good start particularly in games where this was needed. Guiver has always hit the ball hard from the start while Burton has often stayed longer to stroke it.
The middle batting too has had its moments; Cox E, Cox A, Peers, Moore and Dennis have all been called upon to save the situation in one match or another while Germeney has more than once hit us out of trouble. Ellingham has batted well in the nets but his services at the wicket have seldom been necessary; his turn will surely come.
Our attack has been varied and reliable. Dennis and Germeney, the opening team bowlers, fortunately right arm over and left arm round respectively, have seldom allowed the opposition to settle down, while our spin attack in Brown and Cox E has been most reliable and has usually managed to 'clear up the tail.' Both these bowlers have kept a very good length, an absolute essential for their type of bowling. Tassell has come on occasionally and by offering a little more bait to the batsman has claimed a much-needed wicket. In one match he bowled and PITCHED his 'Chinaman.'
Guiver has made a good job of the captaincy and the fielding has generally been good. Up to the time of writing only twice have we failed to reach the hundred mark, and only twice has the opposition taken a hundred runs off our bowling.
Guiver and Dennis will be leaving us this term after a long spell of able and willing service in the Soccer and Cricket XI's; we wish them luck in all their future ventures.
Once again the 2nd XI has had a good season under Mr. Kitchen; we shall in future be using many of his protegés in the 1st XI. Our heartiest congratulations to him for not only interesting the Welsh in the game but also for teaching them how to play it. On the field they have been well captained by Cropley and his leadership will be of great value to us next year.
The Junior XI's have finished up about all-square. Both at Under Fourteen and Under Thirteen levels the bowling has been a good deal better than the batting, and there seems to be a dearth of spinners in the lower school.
All in all, the season has been a good one and we can face the future with every confidence. Once again a big 'thank-you' to all scorers, umpires and twelfth men - and to the weather which has only rained us off once.
