Soham Grammarian Summer 1957

CRICKET NOTES, 1957

It was evident from the beginning of the school year that our batting strength would be more than adequate. Cox and Tassell went back to spin the ball but both Dennis and Germeney had gone and two seamers to bowl the new ball had to be found.

Last year Ellingham had been noticed swinging the ball away and E Cox has always been able to bowl the inswinger. These two have opened the bowling this term and have usually got rid of our opponents' openers; cleaning up the tail be it long or short, has become a formality rather than an achievement with A Cox, who has bowled his leg-spinners - and an occasional one the other way- with guile and accuracy. A Cox's figures speak for themselves, but his nine wickets for ten runs in one school match and the Coxs' concerted effort in another game when they took all ten wickets between them deserves high praise. In the last ten years no one has captained the team better than A Cox; his personal contribution to the success of the 1st XI is highly commendable.

The strength of the batting speaks for itself. Burton and Moore have usually given us a good start; only once have both failed in the same match. Burton's stroke play has given all who have watched him great pleasure, and an added pleasure too it is to know that he will be back with us again next year. Perhaps here special mention might be made of the opening stand of 100 between Burton and Moore in the match against Kings' School.

The Under 14's have produced some good form. Up to the time of writing they have kept their unbeaten record and, provided they retain their keenness for the game during next year when they will have little match practice, one can look forward to future 1st XI's with few qualms. They, in common with all cricketers at school, will miss the excellent services of Mr Kitchen, whose quiet advice after a knock in the nets has been of great value and has helped immensely in raising the standard of cricket throughout the school over the past few years. No doubt he will have the same success with the 'Imps ' of Lincolnshire.

The Second XI have played fewer fixtures this year, but under the able guidance of Mr Fleet they have more than held their own and many of them will be ready for the 1st XI next year.

Lastly a word of advice. Don't forget all about cricket throughout the long soccer season; there will be times when all can practice a few shots or spin the ball for a few minutes.

Good luck!
