CRICKET

The selection of the First XI has presented few problems to the captain, GL Burton, who is to be congratulated on his fifth season in the team. Nine of last year's unbeaten side were available at the beginning of the term, and with players like Bailey knocking at the door we had high hopes of another successful season. One of our big problems, that of finding a leg spinner to replace Cox, has remained with us, but we are hopeful that Munns and Deasley will improve and form the spin attack.

A seam bowler to open with Cox E was found in Gammon, who had bowled well for the Second XI in the previous season, and now the race for places was on. Bailey soon became established, and Ellingham, Herod and Morton have made up the XI on different occasions.

Up to the time of writing these notes, the First XI has been unbeaten, but we have had a number of disappointments. So far no one has made a fifty. Moore and Burton have been close and have often given us a good start, but too often they have made mistakes when they should have been really seeing the ball. Barber, Bailey and Tassell have all batted soundly, the last very well for his 46 not out against The Perse when we were up against it.

In the match against the King's School, Cox E fell in taking a good close in catch and broke a finger in the process. This was indeed a blow, as another opening bowler had now to be found. No sooner had we found one in Morton than he damaged his hand; but then came the rain. Gammon, Brown, Cox E and Tassell have bowled most of our overs, and each one has returned some very good figures. Very little loose stuff has been sent down; if only our batting had been as good!

As I said a little earlier, down came the rain. From half term on we have had little cricket at school. Games with March, the Isle of Ely Police, and Newport, have all had to be postponed, but our disappointment will be somewhat short-lived as the first two are going to be played later in the term.

First XI Colours have been awarded to BD Ward who has once again kept wicket well and on at least one occasion played a good, back to the wall innings.

The fortunes of the Second XI and Under 14 XI have varied as can be judged from their results. One thing they have in common, the quality of their captains, M Thomas and D Clarke respectively. Their keenness has been unflagging, and it is certain they have got the best out of the players under them. Our thanks to Mr Fleet for taking charge of the Under 14 cricket as well as football; he will find some good replacements coming up from Forms I and II next year.

To all those cricketers who are leaving, good luck in your future endeavours, to those returning - have your boots studded for next season.
