FIRST ELEVEN CRICKET NOTES

If results are anything to go by we have had but a fair season this year. It is a long time since we have lost five school matches. We got away to a good start with a draw and a win, but the month of May proved disastrous. The Whitsun holiday, good as it was, to the cricket team was a hoodoo; we lost the services of Cox and Barber, two of our most experienced players during that period, a time when perhaps we needed them most. However, such are the ups and downs of cricket that although we were soundly beaten by the Perse and Cambridgeshire High School, we had a convincing win over Newport who are enjoying their best season for many years - a personal 'thank you' here.

Weak batting has been our failing. No one up to the time of writing has made fifty and totals of a hundred which during the past few years have been commonplace seem beyond our capability. Time and again the bowling of Morton, Bull and Darby has put us in a commanding position which has been frittered away by mediocre batting. Morton is the best in-swing bowler we have had for many years; no one has spun the ball more for us than Darby, and Bull's seam bowling is heartening.

Ward has carried out his duties as captain very well. It is always difficult to captain a side which is struggling, yet, despite our setbacks, he has succeeded in getting the best out of his team.

A word about the future. Our improving fixture list merits a greater concentration on the game and I hope we shall give a better account of ourselves in the latter half of this season and certainly next. Much of our batting strength left last year; next season our openers will be back when, I hope, they will give the bowlers the backing they have needed this year.

Two happy thoughts: the pavilion and the indoor net ought to be in use by next season.

Lastly a sincere 'Thank you' to all umpires and scorers; yours is a vital part in the game.
