CRICKET NOTES

With ten of last year's team available and one or two knocking at the door we looked forward with confidence to a successful season, and apart from the first game when we were soundly beaten by March, the team has come up to expectations. Two of the highlights of the season were our ten wicket victory over March by way of revenge and our one wicket defeat by the Perse after being on top for a good part of the game.

The brunt of the batting has been borne as we expected by Barber and Bailey; they have really proved themselves this year, once they set our opponents too large a total without being parted and once they knocked off our opponent's total without being separated. Morton is perhaps the most improved player in the side; he has great ability at all ball games which I hope he will use to the full. His batting and bowling have been of great value and contributed to our many successes.

Bull has bowled his away-swingers on a length and to good effect; he can bowl a long spell, and he and Morton have forged a good opening attack. So far this has not been a spinners' year but when the wicket has done 'a bit' Darby and Shalders have exploited it to the full; congratulations to Darby on winning his First XI Colours and to Shalders for his magnificent spell at Bury, his cap must surely come.

Ward has captained the team for the second year running and done a good job, his wicket keeping we shall miss very much - he has taken 50 wickets in two seasons - and also his general approach to the game.

The fielding, on the whole, has been good, Munns in particular taking a number of brilliant catches close to the wicket, even Shalders has dumb-founded his severest critics in this department.

I hope some of the middle batsmen will improve ready for next season, we shall have the bowlers but the batting may be brittle.

Lastly a word of thanks to the umpires and scorers without whose services our efforts would be in vain.
