SCHOOL v. PERSE SCHOOL

Another fine performance was recorded by the School First Eleven in their match with the Perse School. Put into bat on a good wicket the School started well and looked to be on the way to a big score with only one wicket down for almost 100 runs. The dismissal of Bailey and Alan Register, both of whom had batted very well, marked the end of the School's success and the remaining seven wickets fell for the addition of a meagre 20 runs.

The visiting Perse School side were thus left 105 minutes in which to score 122 runs for victory - a task which seemed well within their reach. The School bowlers, however, responded magnificently to the challenge. David Register and Barker bowled unchanged for the length of the innings and restricted the score to 102 for five. At one stage, with five wickets down for 45 a School victory looked possible but, as always, the Perse displayed great depth in their batting and eventually came near to victory themselves.

SCHOOL v. KING EDWARD VI SCHOOL, BURY

The second match of the season saw the First Eleven achieve one of their best victories for many seasons. The wicket was hard and very favourable to batsmen and Bury were given first use of it with the hope that they might set the School a reasonable target.

The School bowlers toiled all afternoon in the hot sun with scant reward due mainly to the inefficiency of the School fielders rather than any fault of the bowlers. Bury batted on after tea for their total of 125-5 before declaring leaving the School 75 minutes in which to get these runs.

This appeared to be a mammoth task and soon seemed even greater when Aves was bowled in the second over. Runs came very slowly at first but the rate rose before Morton was out with the score at 50. Then, however, Bailey took control of the bowling and with grand support from Register and Darby was able to guide the School to a well-merited and very exciting victory with just two minutes.
