CRICKET NOTES, 1963

From the outset of the season we knew that we should be short of bowling and that we should have a young side. However despair sat heavily upon us when Aves, the vice-captain, had to give up cricket on account of a broken right wrist that had been suspect for some time.

Before the first game, however, we thought that C Ellis might help out with his quick seamers and this proved to be the case for one match, for after bowling from one end throughout the innings, within two days he had dislocated his shoulder and he too was out for the rest of the term.

We were now left with Register, the captain, and Newstead who had taken over as vice-captain from Aves, and briefly this combination has been enough. It is a fact that at the time of writing these two have virtually bowled unchanged throughout our opponents' innings and so well have they performed that we have won our last five consecutive games. They have both bowled a steady length and have moved the ball in the air well. There is no doubt that our success so far has been due to them and the School is grateful for their inspiring effort.

This year we are a young side, and we expect a handsome dividend from them next year and the year after. J Chapman, one of the seniors in the team, has batted very well in his own unorthodox but effective way. He has a good eye and hits the ball hard. Newstead, Rosbrook and Bussingham have all made their contributions with the bat although they have not reached quite the heights expected, but time is on their side and they should have matured by next season.

In general the fielding has been good, at times it has been brilliant; some of the infielding has been a delight to watch and impossible chances have been taken. The mark of a good team is often the fielding and it is always a pleasure to be able to comment favourably on this most important side of the game.

The 2nd XI, ably led by M Walker, is enjoying a good season. Their highlight must be their 187 for 3 wickets declared against the Perse; Stearn struck out boldly in this match to finish with 87.

The Under 14's are reaching great heights and plumbing the depths. Once again Mr Bozeat has spent many hours in coaching and looking after their interests. We are sure that in time his efforts will bear good fruit.

Once again our grateful thanks to all umpires, scorers, and to some extent the critics.
