CRICKET NOTES, 1965

The ever-growing accent on the Fenlands Schools Sports, the importance of examinations, and the shortening of the Summer Term now seem to limit the Cricket Season to minor proportions. Cricket needs time, time to practise and time to play.

As in football, we were in for an early set-back when Bussingham, our opening lefthander who showed so much promise last year, was struck on the nose by a rising ball, and consequently has only been available for the last three matches.

The bowling has been good this year. Ellis, now recovered from a strained shoulder which kept him out of the game for much of last season, has shown how pacey he really is, and together with left-hander Pearson has been our mainstay in attack. Rosbrook and Beavan have also bowled well on occasions; Beavan was of great value in the match against the Perse when Ellis was unable to play, and Rosbrook clinched our victory against the Friends School.

The batting - apart from odd flashes of determination from Rosbrook, some occasional big hitting by Ellis, and a fifty from Bussingham to signal his return to the game - has been mediocre, and until more time is spent on learning the basic techniques of this side of the game our success will be limited. The First and Second Forms are now being drilled in batting by Mr. Ellis, and this most essential groundwork is bound to pay off.

The Second and Under 14 XI's have had seasons of varying fortunes, and our junior XI lost narrowly to St. Faith's, who thus avenged their football defeat.
