Soham Grammarian Summer 1966

CRICKET NOTES, 1966

Five of last year's team were available at the beginning of the term; most of the bowling had gone, and a good deal of the batting. Bussingham remained to captain the team, and really our hope of any success rested heavily on his shoulders. That we did not lose a match in 1966 was largely due to the efforts of the captain, who came off each time it was vitally necessary. Against the Perse, Bussingham made 96, an innings that all who saw it will not forget, followed by his 45 not out against Newport, and a most opportune 66 not out against King's Lynn in the last match.

The only other innings of note was Barnett's effort against the Old Boys; going in with the score at 10 for 2 he took the score to 80 for 3 before he was out for a splendid 40 - splendid indeed for a Fourth Former.

But you cannot survive a season's cricket without loss with one batsman, even when he is of the Bussingham calibre. Murray has kept wicket very well for the past two seasons and he has often been a very difficult batsman to dislodge on several vital occasions. Seaton has been a good all-rounder, and we shall expect great things from him next season. Burton and Bartlett have had their moments with the bat, and Bray has opened the bowling with fire and penetration. Parr is improving as a seam bowler, and he and Seaton will probably form the spearhead of our attack next season.

But here again I must mention that Bussingham, besides making the runs, has often had to take the wickets and has finished the season with 18 wickets at a cost of 13 runs apiece.

The 2nd XI has struggled bravely and just about held its own. This has been largely due to Moll, who has captained the side with the enthusiasm he brings to everything he tackles.

The Under 14's won four of their matches and lost two, and I am sure that Mr Bozeat has been satisfied with their performances. There are a lot of young players in the school who show great promise - King, Motley and Walker, to mention only a few.

To all umpires and scorers once again our grateful thanks. Here's to next season.
