Soham Grammarian Summer 1968

CRICKET REPORT, 1968

It must be admitted at the outset that no one thought highly of the School's prospects at the beginning of the season. These fears were confirmed by the earlier matches, reaching the nadir against the Perse, well though the School bowled and fielded. Thereafter the scene brightened perceptibly as the effects of constant practice began to be felt.

With only the second half of the season being considered, the results were reasonably encouraging. The Umpire lost the game against Cambridge Grammar by insisting a generous declaration; in fairness, he was aided and abetted by a vital dropped catch. Against Saffron Walden, rain intervened when we looked like winning, while the Thetford game was over almost before it started; two hours fifty minutes is simply not enough time for any form of senior cricket.

The one victory came against a Newport side weakened by absences, but at least we played with authority and confidence; no one can quibble with 150 for 3 declared. Against Huntingdon we were on top throughout, but they held on for a draw. Thereafter the floods came; this was all the more irritating as the side was then at its most enthusiastic and skilful; much time spent in the nets was paying dividends.

Colours were awarded to Salmon, the captain - and a very good captain he became - Parr, who headed both the batting and the bowling averages, and Barnett, a delightful bat when he is going well; but the most rewarding aspect of the season lay in the way every player gave of his best and was an integral member of the side. The least pleasing was the way the cricket at Soham is played in the void; throughout the season, we were watched by precisely three spectators, and they were all at the same game.
