SOCCER MATCHES

FIRST ELEVEN

Saturday, Sept 30th v March GS 1st XI (away)
From the first whistle the School attacked very strongly and Collins sent in a good shot, which hit the bar with the goalkeeper well beaten. The School returned to the attack and another shot by Kendall struck the bar; after ten minutes, however, the School scored the first goal when the March right-back deflected the ball into his own goal. Before half-time further goals were added by Currie and Draper.
Half-time School 3, March GS 0

Draper added another quick goal, following good work by Kendall, the best forward on view. March came more into the picture, but they were met by a solid School defence. Further goals were added by Currie, Collins and Fuller.

Wednesday, Oct 11th v Newmarket GS 1st XI (home)
For the first home game this season the School fielded the same team as that which had won so handsomely at March, but in this game they gave a very disappointing exhibition. In the first half Newmarket were much quicker on the ball and deservedly led by one goal at half-time. They might have had more but for the woodwork and two fine saves by Sargent.

The second half was only two minutes old when Draper had the chance to equalise - but he missed an open goal from two yards! Then in a quarter of an hour the School scored three goals - two own goals and one from Collins. Just before time Newmarket gained their second goal from close range.

Saturday, Oct 14th v Newport GS 1st XI (away)
The School got off to a bad start when Roe had the bad luck to turn the ball into his own goal when Sargent was in a good position to save. The School fought back fiercely and just before half-time Currie notched a deserved equaliser, following good work by Fuller.

Play at the beginning of the second half was quite even until Gillett kicked the ball from Sargent's grasp, after he had saved brilliantly from the Newport centreforward. This demoralised the whole team and within two more minutes Newport had scored their third goal. The School returned to the attack, but Fuller was the only forward to show his true form.

Thursday, Oct 19th v Kings' School, Ely, 1st XI (home)
Within three minutes of the kick-off Peacock scored the first goal with a hard shot from close range. For the rest of the half the School attacked incessantly, but no further goals were scored, although Collins had hard luck with a drive that the goalkeeper stopped with his foot.

On the resumption the School again attacked strongly and Gillett, the new centre-forward, soon put them further ahead with a picture goal. Then three more goals were added in the space of twenty minutes by Gillett (2) and Kendall. Kings' School came more into the picture, but during the whole course of the game Sargent did not have one direct shot to save.

Saturday, Oct 28th v Huntingdon GS 1st XI (away)
The first half of this game was very scrappy with both defences proving too good for the forwards. The Huntingdon centre-forward missed two golden opportunities of putting his side in the lead, while at the other end Peacock was too slow in getting to a centre from Collins.

Play livened up after the interval and both defences were again kept very busy. After ten minutes' play the School scored two goals in as many minutes; the first by Gillett from Collins's pass and the second by Collins from close range. Play switched to the other end and Huntingdon reduced the arrears, following a faulty back-pass by Fuller. The game ended with Huntingdon attacking strongly.

Saturday, Nov 4th v March GS 1st XI (home)
This game was played on a very treacherous pitch and in the opening stages both sides missed some easy chances. After about ten minutes, however, March, taking advantage of a faulty clearance, took the lead through their inside-left. Just before half-time a good movement down the left wing resulted in an equaliser from Collins at close range.
Half-time School l, March 1

After the interval, however, the School did most of the attacking and Fuller had a grand shot well saved by the March goalkeeper. Fuller's efforts were soon rewarded when he scored with a good drive from an oblique angle. Before the final whistle Peacock and Gillett had added two more goals.

Saturday, Nov 11th v King Edward VI, Bury, 1st XI (home)
Within two minutes of the kick-off the School had taken the lead through a good goal by Gillett. But the School now seemed to rest on their oars, and Bury did most of the attacking. The School defence managed to hold out until about ten minutes before the interval when the Bury centre-forward scored with a long lob.

In the second half the standard of the play was again very poor, and it was left to the School defence to save the day. Bury attacked very strongly and Sargent had to make two excellent saves to keep his goal intact. For the School Daisley, Raven and Fuller were tireless workers.

Saturday, Nov 18th v Saffron Walden 1st XI (away)
This game was played on a very big pitch and for a time the School were completely disorganised. Within five minutes Sargent was brought into action, and he made two good saves from the centre-forward. With the wind and slope in their favour the School pressed strongly and Peacock gave them the lead with a shot from close range.

After the interval the School defence was thoroughly tested and, with Daisley and Currie outstanding, they weathered the storm very well. However, they did concede one goal, a grand left-footed shot from an acute angle by the Saffron Walden centre-forward. Towards the end both sides attacked fiercely, but no further goals resulted.

Wednesday, Nov 22nd v Newport GS 1st XI(home)
After the previous three days' heavy rain the pitch was more like a quagmire than a football pitch. Nevertheless this was the best game that the School have played this season. In the first half both sides had their chances to score, but they were all thrown away. Gillett had two good opportunities; once he shot over the bar and the next time he shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Half-time School 0, Newport GS 0

The second half was very lively and, urged on by their spectators, the School tried their utmost to get a goal, but all the attacks petered out when they reached the penalty area. Newport, however, were very much on the target and Sargent had his busiest game of the season. He brought off a succession of fine saves, one from a free-kick being particularly good. But the glory of this game must not go to one person; the whole side played as a team and they all showed excellent spirit. Result School 0, Newport GS 1st XI 0

Wednesday, Nov 29th v Newmarket GS 1st XI (away)
At Newmarket, the School had a much easier game than was expected from the result of the home game. The School kicked with the wind and South soon opened the scoring. South scored his second goal with a spectacular overhead kick. The third goal was scored by Daisley with a long lob.
Half-time School 3, Newmarket 0

In the second half play was more even, but the School netted four more goals in reply to Newmarket's one. One goal was scored by Peacock with a long shot and Hubbard scored from close in. The other two goals were put past the goalkeeper by Newmarket defenders. The School really played good football throughout this game, and it was pleasing to see passes finding the men and the forwards moving as a line.
Result School 7, Newmarket 1

Saturday, Dec 2nd v King Edward VI, Bury (away)
Playing good constructive football, the School attacked constantly in the opening ten minutes, and following a good forward movement Peacock centred for Hubbard to score the first goal. The second goal soon followed, the scorer being South. Bury hit back and reduced the deficit, but the School went further ahead through Peacock, who scored from an acute angle.
Half-time School 3, King Edward VI, Bury, l

The second half saw a deterioration in the standard of play. An injury to Ibbott disorganised the School and during the later stages of the game Bury made strong attacks upon the School goal and they scored once again. Towards the end the School forwards, in a gallant rally, had several near misses. The victory was a narrow one, but deserved.
