SOCCER NOTES

With three matches to go at the time of writing, we can look back on our efforts so far with modest congratulation.

This term has had two highlights: it looks as if John Fordham will again play in the Varsity match, and some eighty of us will be there to support him, and secondly we have obtained a fixture with the University Falcons for the first time. The Falcons, who fielded a very representative team, soundly defeated us, but we were by no means disgraced; in fact we did a little better against them than most schools manage. Our last year's captain, Burton, scored five very good goals in the match; earlier he had appeared in the term in the Freshmen's and Final trial.

In July we said farewell to many of what my brother calls the "old gentlemen", to whit Moore, Gammon, Burton, Herod et al, but nevertheless we have given a good account of ourselves this term. For the record so far we have lost two school matches by the odd goal, one of them by a penalty, drawn one, and won eight.

The team itself has shown all-round ability. Ward has set a very good example as captain, to benefit the team as a whole he has played out of position throughout the term.

Our Feeders-in from last year's Under 15, namely Morley at centre-half and Bailey in goal, have established themselves; Johnson and Cox have worked like Trojans at full-back and Munns and Clarke have been tireless half-backs.

The forwards have had their moments - or am I too polite? Yardy and Darby are two spirited wingers; Ward and Bishop are both ninety minute men, and Parish at times has proved his marksmanship; he has one weakness, if such it can be called, he forages too much for himself instead of spearheading attacks.

A tear of sympathy for Holmes, Hunt and Goulty who narrowly missed the First XI, and a pat on the back to March GS 2nd XI who beat us for the first time on record at second team level.

The Second and Under 14 XIs have more than held their own, and we can look back on a term which began with forebodings but has ended with the job well done.

To all linesmen and referees, thank you and a Happy Christmas. Now to warmer days!
