Soham Grammarian Spring 1964

SOCCER NOTES

During the final matches of the season, we received our biggest blow when we finished with nine men, both Sharp and Cullum retiring with knee injuries. Sharp made two attempts to play later in the season, but broke down each time; fortunately Cullum had no recurrence of his injury, and played well throughout the term.

A very gallant Newmarket XI held us to a draw at home, after we had won at Newmarket, and we drew with Huntingdon away.

Our only defeat was at the hands of Bury, who beat us 3-2 at Soham, after we had gained a convincing win at Bury by 6-1; in that match we were one down at half-time. The remaining matches were won, and on the whole the team has played very well. Chapman has made a good job of the captaincy, and the Old Colours, Rosbrook and Houghton, have maintained their form. Sargent started off badly, but improved later in the term.

Porter, who was almost thrust in goal, proved a sound last line, but if Impey had not sustained an injury early in the season, the goalkeeper's place would have been very open. Cullum and Newell are very good players, and we shall hear more of them; Cullum played an unforgettable game at Bury, and has been very consistent.

Newell's ball play is a treat to behold, and some of his goals have been sheer delight. Rosbrook has generally been in command of the centre of the field, and we shall rely heavily on him next year.

Woodfin on the left wing has improved steadily and always gives of his best. We are pleased that Houghton appears to have completely recovered from his nasty injury of two years ago, and we have yet to see the best of Bussingham and Logan.

The Second XI lost one match, this again to Bury, and won their remaining games. Kent has captained the Second XI very well, despite those long journeys from Ipswich, and there has always been good team spirit shown.

The Under 14's have once again won all their matches, and Mr Bozeat is to be congratulated on his fine record.

We have a good junior team building up in the First and Second Forms, where Mr Ellis is busy teaching the skills of soccer to a receptive audience. He is certainly creating enthusiasm for the game.

Lastly, my usual thanks to all those referees, linesmen, tea-makers, reserves, etc., mostly unsung, but without whom we should be lost.

At Under 15 level, we congratulate Burton, Youngs and Fretwell for playing regularly for the County Team, and Bartlett for an occasional appearance. The South Cambs. team has had a good season, and I am told that our boys have given a good account of themselves. At present, trials are taking place for next season's team, and Neate, Kennedy, Pope, Seymour and Campbell are all included.
