FOOTBALL NOTES, 1965-66

Skills are not enough: you must have the spirit to go with them. During the early part of last season we seemed to have neither, and if this was not bad enough the incidence of members of the XI wanting to do other things on Saturdays made team changes inevitable, which had their damaging effect on results.

However, by the end of the season the First XI had redeemed itself and the record stood at seven wins, six losses, with five matches drawn. No school match was lost from the end of November to March and a pleasing feature of the second term's effort was the fine display in three hard matches in mid-February. Downing College, who did so well in the University League, just had the edge on us, while the University Falcons, who paid us the compliment of including two Blues in their side, were held to a 2-0 win. Our best performance in a school match came at the end of the season when we defeated the City GS by 3 goals to 1 at Cambridge.

The real trouble was that we had no striker in the forward line and indeed if there had been one there was also no-one who could lay on the vital passes which Newell had accomplished so well the year before. What strength there was in the side was in defence where Neate and Burton stood us in good stead; it was surprising that the forwards gained so little inspiration from their efforts. An even greater task will confront us next season when very few of this year's XI will be available; it will be a very young team and no doubt will include many of this year's Under 15 XI.

The Second XI had a fair season. The Under 14's too, after a number of years of high success, slumped a little, particularly after an unfortunate accident to Anderson, who has been their mainstay for two seasons.

The top spot of the season goes to the Under 15 XI who under the guidance of Mr Bozeat won all their matches except one and saw to it that we retained the Fordham Trophy.

As I began, so must I finish on a sad note. This year we are losing Mr Ellis, a talented player and inspiring coach, and I am sure all soccer players will miss his help and guidance and join with me in wishing him well on his return to the North.
