Hymn    "O GOD OF EARTH AND ALTAR.” G.K. Chesterton
English Traditional Melody.

O God of earth and altar,
Bow down and hear our cry,
Our earthly rulers falter,
Our people drift and die;
The walls of gold entomb us,
The swords of scorn divide,
Take not thy thunder from us,
But take away our pride.
From all that terror teaches,
From lies of tongue and pen,
From all the easy speeches
That comfort cruel men,
From sale and profanation
Of honour and the sword,
From sleep and from damnation
Deliver us, good Lord !

Tie in a living tether
The prince and priest and thrall,
Bind all our our lives together,
Smite us and save us all ;
In ire and exultation
Aflame with faith, and free,
Lift up a living nation
A single sword to thee.

Madrigal—The School Choir.

“SINCE FIRST I SAW YOUR FACE."  Thomas Ford

Since first I saw your face, I resolv’d
To honour and renown you;
If now I be disdain’d, I wish
My heart had never known you.
What, I that lov'd and yon that lik’d
Shall we begin to wrangle?
No, no, no ! my heart is fast
And cannot disentangle.

The sun, whose beams most glorious are,
Rejecteth no beholder,
And your sweet beauty, past compare,
Made my poor eyes the bolder.
Where beauty moves, and wit delights,
And signs of kindness bind me,
There, O there! where’er I go,
I leave my heart behind me.
