Soham G.S. hold last independent speech day

Soham Grammar School's speech day yesterday, the last before the school becomes part of the new comprehensive federation of colleges in September, was a nostalgic occasion. Looking back over the school's 400 [sic] -year history the overall tone of the speeches, although they pointed out that an era was coming to an end, was one of optimism.

The headmaster, Mr Edward Armitage, making his 27th speech-day presentation at the school; said: "Academically and athletically we are very much a going concern and our last year has amply demonstrated this."

The prizes were presented by a former master and author of a history of the Grammar School, Mr John Browning, now headmaster of Heartsease School, Norwich.

Spirit
The vice-chairman of the governors, the Rev Max Williams, told the pupils and parents gathered under a marquee in the school garden: "I am sure that the spirit engendered in the school over 400 years will permeate through the Ely federation."

Major awards were as follows: Parent's Association Prizes, PA Bolton, D Crabb; Old Boys' Prize, SL Murfitt; Headmaster's Merit Prizes, SC Wynn, SJ Yeomans; Stubbs Cup, SB Thornhill; Bacon Cup, B King.

Special awards: Army Cadet Force, PA Bolton; Venture Scout, SC Wynn; Divinity (Wright Memorial Prize), PJ Jaggard; Drama (Hockley Memorial Prize, given by Mr CW Crouch, IE Allen; Library (Hanworth Award), MM Potashnick.

Goodbye to all that ...

Soham Grammar School's speech day last week was the last big occasion at the school before it turns the page on a History stretching back almost 300 years.

The grammar school and Soham Village College merge in September as part of the Soham-Ely comprehensive scheme.

This week on the last day of the summer term, and the last day of the school itself, July 28, more than 450 governors, staff, pupils and former pupils of the school will walk in procession down Soham High Street to the parish church.

There a commemoration service will be held. Old Boys from the school, founded in 1686, are expected to flock back for the service and the headmaster, Mr Edward Armitage, said that the church, with seating for 700, could be filled to capacity.
