Soham Grammarian Spring 1958
THE WEMBLEY TRIP
On Saturday, December 7th [1957], a new landmark was reached in the history of the School when it saw its first soccer Blue trot out onto the immaculate green turf of Wembley. The School representative was John Fordham, of Oxford, who is well remembered by many boys at school and as a result nearly one hundred Grammarians made the journey to give him their moral and vocal support. It was rather a cloudy, dull day and the playing conditions were very difficult, but Fordham acquitted himself well in a very fast and exciting game which ended in a one-all draw.Everyone was naturally disappointed because Fordham failed to score although he went very close on two occasions, but nevertheless the match was enjoyed by all and the members of the school present must feel very grateful to Mr. Taylor for organising such a grand trip.
