It was 8.45 on a dull and wet July morning when nine boys, armed to the teeth with peanuts and cress sandwiches, invaded Cambridge Station to join the Fenman, already carrying Mr. Hemmings and Mr. Rennison and the other fourteen Second Formers. The Fenman didn't waste much time - we arrived at Liverpool Street at 9.53 a.m., and wasn't it raining! We took the Tube to Tower Hill, and went straight to the Tower, there were guns galore and marvellous suits of armour - some boys were apprehensive about going into the Bloody Tower!
The River Trip to Westminster was next on the agenda. The boat was not particularly well closed in, and many boys were eating egg sandwiches to the accompaniment of a rain bath. Westminster - Big Ben - the Houses of Parliament - what a sight through the rain!
Again by subway to Kensington and the Museums. In the Natural History Museum the things to see are undoubtedly the magnificent peacock that greets you on entering, the Diplodocus skeleton (all 32 feet of it), and the full size model and the skeleton of the Blue Whale (all 98 feet of it). The next museum was the Science Museum, with its newly added aircraft section, and all the working models and flashing diagrams. Two hours there wasn't long enough. Outside, in the pouring rain, ice-cream was in demand.
We were going to walk through the parks, but the rain changed our programme. Madame Tussaud's was an excellent substitute, even if the Chamber of Horrors failed to horrify. Time flew, and we were soon on Liverpool Street Station again, waiting for the train home. We had a very good day, and wish to thank all who made it possible.
